1) HOW TO IMPROVE BUSINESS AND PERSONAL LIFE - WORK WIRELESS
Those of you with your own web business understand the importance of being online. You can automate many aspects of your business, but the bottom line is - you need to answer customer service email, follow up with potential clients, make sure your server is up and your web site is live, etc., etc.. Speaking from my own personal experience, I dread the consequences of being offline for a day or so. The backlog in my email inbox can be downright intimidating. Even if your business is at a level that you can afford to hire customer service staff to handle customer service emails, and you have a sales staff to follow up with potential clients, I bet that your email inbox still gets full from people within your organization that need your input or need you to make decisions. Bottom line, if you have an online business - email is very important to you. Email keeps you connected to your business, your clients, and your employees.
Now answer this question. How much would the quality of your life improve if you could work from anywhere? Wherever you decide to work that day would be your office. Wouldn't it be great to be able to have this option? Imagine if you could pack a picnic lunch and take your kids to the park, or take them fishing at the lake. In between the fun quality time you are spending with your family, you answer a few incoming emails, contact a couple of clients via cell phone, chat online with the people at your office.
Does this sound like a dream to you or one of those futuristic commercials? It's totally possible. I know because I live it every day thanks to wireless internet connections, portable computing solutions, and a cell phone.
Wherever I would go, I would always take my notebook computer with me. In my line of work, our clients rely on my staff and I to answer technical customer service emails around the clock. To access the Internet when away from the office, I have an account with a nationwide dial up access provider, I also use a wireless service provider to provide me with access for those times where plugging into a phone jack just isn't possible or practical. The AIRCARD (wireless modem) slides into the pcmcia slot on my notebook computer, and assuming that I am in the coverage area, I am able to get online wirelessly. As a triple back up, I have a wireless web phone that plugs into the serial connection on my notebook and allows me to get online and work wirelessly. I don't suggest using the wireless web phone as your main Internet access solution to working wirelessly, unless you have a lot of spare batteries for your phone, and a stellar service plan with a lot of minutes included for wireless web.
After carrying a notebook computer around with me for the last 5 years, I decided that sometimes smaller is better. Since the bulk of my day is spent answering email, and using telnet to log into our clients' servers, I decided to find a smaller (light weight), affordable, mobile solution that would let me answer email and use telnet wirelessly, while away from the office. Basically, something I could use when I don't want to carry a notebook computer around.
One option was to purchase a smaller, light weight notebook computer. But instead I chose a windows ce unit, the NEC MOBILE PRO 780. Why a windows ce unit? The price was right ($800), and I like the "instant on" of windows ce. In the five minutes it takes you to boot up your notebook, I'm already online answering emails with my windows ce unit. This color unit has a full size keyboard, weighs less than 2 lbs, and is less than half the size of my notebook computer. Did I mention the excellent battery life? 8-13 hours!
Understand that the windows ce unit is not meant to replace my notebook or my desktop. This unit is used to compliment my other computers. As my father always says, "Use the right tool for the job." For those times where I really don't need my notebook computer with me, but I still want to stay connected, my MOBILE PRO steps up and does the job.
With wireless connections and portable computing solutions, you don't need to be tethered to your computer at your office or in your home. With the right tools, you can access your email from anywhere, anytime. You can telnet into your server, browse the web, use real time chat, etc.
Call your clients from your "outdoor office" at the lake. Who said that owning your own online business meant having to always stay indoors behind your desktop or notebook? Go wireless and spend quality time with your friends and family. Go ahead and mix business with pleasure! My clients don't care where I access or send my email from. They just want their emails answered... PERIOD.
Do I practice what I preach? I sure do! After all, I wrote this article on my MOBILE PRO while waiting in long lines at Disney World.
